Deck, Porch, Veranda, pergola - they are all similar things with a similar purpose: enabling homeowners to utilize their outdoor space in multiple ways, Extending the living area of the house into the great outdoors.
When you have the magnificent Pacific Northwest as your outdoors, it's hard to not love the idea. However, when you're dealing with the wide range of weather we have here, from the rains in the fall, winter and spring, the snow and freezing weather in the winter and the summer heat (and inevitable heatwave), your builder better know the best way to build a deck in our area.
Scott Meeker does. In fact, it's one of the main reasons he decided to start 4 Seasons Decks: he wanted to build decks and fences for the people in the PNW and do it the right way. Bringing his decades of experience, combined with his team of hardworking and professional craftsmen and craftswomen, 4 Seasons Decks is one of the first places to call if you are in the market for a new deck or to repair an existing one.
While many deck builders show up with some pre-made plans and then try to pressure the homeowner into what they may not want just to make things faster and easier for their inexperienced crews, Danika Construction does things differently. Scott Meeker has gained a reputation of not only listening to the client, taking his time to understand their desired project and all off the facets it can include, but he also is more than willing to take on the more challenging projects. Multiple levels with a staircase leading up a hillside to access a preferred quiet area? You bet. Build a circular deck with a tree at the center, a tree with special meaning to the family? Happy to do it.
See, while it's true some decks can be relatively similar, that doesn't mean they have to be. Each deck, each house, each family is going to have some unique requirements or needs for their outdoor living space. It's Danika Construction's job to make sure they're building a deck that will not only last for several decades, but also satisfy the needs of the family utilizing it over the next several decades as well.
If you've been collecting photos and ideas or even sketches of a deck you have been imaging for your house and your family, give us a call. We'd love to listen to your dreams and see what we can do to help bring them to life. And if you know you need a deck but just want something simple, we're happy to help with that as well. Our goal is to make sure the deck we build is a match to the house and the family, not some preconceived notion that the builder has.
Experience plus professionalism combined with your ideas and a dose of creativity on our part and you're going to love what happens. Call us today to find out.
Upkeep on your deck isn't something most people think a lot about. Like many parts of a home, the deck is something that works until it doesn't and then it needs to be fixed. It's a given - when you combine time, nature, human error and a lack of maintenance and upkeep, decks will need to be repaired eventually.
That's where the experience of 4 Seasons Decks comes into play. Since we know the right way to build decks and have been doing so for quite some time, we also know the right way to fix a deck so that you aren't as likely to be in same position a few years down the road. We don't believe in quick fixes or doing something "just for now" - those quick fixes get ignored later and, combined with a lack of maintenance that got the deck there in the first place, something else breaks sooner rather than later.
We don't put homeowners in that unenviable position. 4 Seasons Decks does things right the first time so that our clients can rest easy knowing they don't have to worry about the deck repair or deck construction project we've just finished.
If something is broken on your deck, if you want to have your existing deck made bigger, change something or just want to make sure it's being taken care of the way it should be, call 4 Seasons Decks today. We'll set up a no-obligation onsite estimate consultation. We'll look at the actual situation, talk with you about what you want and give your our recommendations.
It's what we do because it's the right way to do things.
Here are some common questions we will ask potential clients when we talk with them on the phone in order to get an idea of what they'll be interested in. It speeds up our estimate creation time and makes sure we have all the things in place that we need to know before visiting their site. We've added some additional information that can help guide the answer where applicable.
How high off of the ground will your proposed deck be?
Six inches, six feet, twelve feet? Multiple levels? The more information we have the better we can assess your requirements.
Do you have a decking material in mind?
For composite deck material we have come to the conclusion that the TimberTech/AZEK brand of decking is the best choice for our wet NW climate. We install composites with a hidden fastener system. Composite decks have a twenty to thirty year warranty while capped polymer decking comes with a fifty year warranty.
Cedar is the traditional decking of the NW. it is naturally resistant to rot. We install cedar with premium 3” deck screws through the surface. Expect to replace this surface every fifteen to eighteen years.
IPE is a Brazilian hardwood with a celebrated reputation for beauty and longevity. It has a naturally tropical look to it that can be enhanced and maintained by proper use of oil and protectants. This super dense wood can be installed with hidden fasteners. IPE has a thirty year plus life span.
Do I need to maintain my deck? How much time will it take?
All wooden decks have to be maintained yearly. Expect to spend at least one day a year cleaning and staining. An unstained wood deck will "silver" and won’t last nearly as long as one that is properly maintained. Composite decks won't require the staining, but it is always a good idea to clean them off well once a year and inspect for any potential damage.
Joist tape? What's that?
Joist tape goes between the decking and the structural joists and is is an option we offer. What does it do? It keeps water and debris from sitting on the joists which leads to degradation and decay. Essentially, it helps the joist system to last much longer. We strongly suggest using it if your installing a decking that you expect to last 20 years or more.
Picture frame?
This is another option that clients often choose. It is a trim board that usually runs around the border of a deck. It helps to give the deck an inlayed and more finished look than without.
What permits do I need and how do I go about getting them?
We will do the permitting process for you. We will assemble the plot map, construction plans as well as any as-builds the engineer may need. This covers all typical permit fees and city documentation. The typical permit cost completely done by us is $4200. Engineering is not included in this cost. Depending on the scale, engineering could be from $500 - $1200. We have been allowing two to three months to complete the permitting process due to the unpredictable delays that COVID restrictions have created in city offices.
Do I need to put handrails on my deck?
Handrails are one of the major expenses on a elevated deck. Handrails are required when any deck is thirty inches off of the ground. That being said, we highly recommend them when the deck level is eighteen inches off of the ground or more.
What kinds of handrails do you install? What do you recommend?
We can install aluminum picket handrails in addition to stainless steel cable handrails with an aluminum frame. Both styles can be mounted on top of the deck surface or on the side of the deck (facia mounted). Facia mounting adds approximately $100 per post. These styles of handrails will last a life time with little maintenance.
Wood handrails are typically cedar 4x4 posts bolted onto the deck frame with special hardware. The sections of handrail in-between the posts can be your typical 2x2 cedar picket, an aluminum picket, hogwire panels, horizontal boards or anything you can dream up. The post for wooden handrails should last twenty plus years. Yearly maintenance is required.
Do you do planter boxes as well?
You bet! We typically build planter boxes with a pressure treated frame and clad them to match the decking selection because, of course, you'll want them to match.

We highly recommend Scott and Katie! They rebuilt and resurfaced our existing decks with TimberTech Legacy Pro. They are professional, clean up every day, priced competitively, detail oriented, reliable... Need I say more?
Scott and his team did an excellent job on my deck. They are honest, always on time, and personable. Job-site always tidy. Professional and I will use their services again if needed.
Excellent work quality, fair and transparent prices and above all just really decent human beings. We hired Scott to build a small back deck and fence and from the day they came out to give us an estimate (they spent an hour thoughtfully sketching out the schematics) to finishing the project only a couple weeks later, they showed professionalism and care with every step. *Highest recommendation.*
Scott Katie and the crew provided us with the deck and cover that was with hat we wanted. They were timely and kept a clean worksite. We are extremely happy with our project.
After the waterproofing was done on my rooftop deck Scott's crew laid new floor joists on top. Custom shaped to match the slope of the deck. With an IPE surface. The nicest deck on the block.
Scott brought amazing ideas on how to create a space that would be beautiful and durable...The efficiency in which they worked was awesome to watch. They even heard our concerns and were totally respectful of our two-year old's naptime. I've spent just about every morning since it was built enjoying a cup of coffee and dinner every evening with my family and friends. we're so happy we hired Scott for this project.
